Eight labourers from Uttar Pradesh were killed and several others injured after a pickup vehicle carrying them collided with a dumper truck in Madhya Pradesh's Bhind district early Tuesday. The accident occurred around 1 am near Chhimaka village in the Gohad area. According to preliminary information, the pickup truck lost control while attempting to avoid a herd of cows on the highway before colliding with the oncoming dumper.

The impact badly damaged the pickup vehicle, leaving several labourers trapped inside. Police from the Gohad Chauraha police station reached the spot after receiving information about the accident, with local villagers assisting in the rescue operation. Those who were injured were pulled from the damaged vehicle and taken to Gohad Hospital for immediate medical attention.

Doctors at the hospital declared eight labourers dead, while those with serious injuries were referred to Gwalior for further treatment after receiving initial care. Police said all the labourers travelling in the pickup were residents of Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh. They had travelled to the Gwalior region for paddy transplantation work and were returning to their homes after completing the agricultural work.

The bodies of the deceased have been kept at the hospital mortuary as authorities work to establish their identities and inform their families. The local administration has also begun arrangements to transport the mortal remains to Lakhimpur Kheri. Officials from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are coordinating the response, while medical teams continue to treat those injured in the crash.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the deaths and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the family of each deceased labourer. He described the accident as deeply distressing and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. The Chief Minister also directed officials to coordinate with the Madhya Pradesh government regarding the transportation of the bodies and the treatment of the injured.

Police and local authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the collision. The preliminary account indicates that the pickup was travelling on the highway when the driver attempted to avoid a herd of cows and subsequently lost control. Further details about the injured labourers and the exact sequence of events are expected as the investigation progresses.
