5 Injured As Lift Collapses From 4th Floor In Mumbai's Jay Krupa Tower

Lift in Jay Krupa Tower, Byculla, collapsed from fourth floor due to suspected cable failure, injuring five who were hospitalized.

Five people were injured after an elevator in an 18-storey residential building collapsed from the fourth floor in Mumbai's Byculla area late on Wednesday night. The incident occurred at Jay Krupa Tower, located on Ghodapdeo Cross Lane No. 1 in Byculla East, around 10 pm (with some reports citing approximately 9 pm or 10:02 pm). Emergency services, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, ambulances, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ward staff, responded swiftly to the scene to assist the victims and secure the area.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the elevator plunged due to a suspected cable failure or breakage. The lift, which was in operation within the G+18 high-rise structure, suddenly dropped from the fourth floor, resulting in serious injuries to the five occupants. No fatalities were reported, and the injured individuals were promptly shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Three were admitted to the state-run JJ Hospital, while one each was taken to Jaslok Hospital and Balaji Hospital. Authorities have described the victims' conditions as stable, though further medical updates are awaited.

The accident has raised immediate safety concerns in the densely populated residential building. Mumbai Fire Brigade officials, including Assistant Divisional Fire Officer VN Sangle, confirmed the details of the collapse and the rapid response effort. Residents and eyewitnesses assisted in the initial rescue before professional teams arrived. The building's elevator maintenance records and the specific cause of the cable issue are now under scrutiny as part of an ongoing probe by local authorities.

Elevator malfunctions, particularly cable-related failures, remain a recurring issue in older or high-traffic high-rise structures across Mumbai, often linked to inadequate maintenance, overloading, or wear and tear. This incident highlights the critical need for regular safety inspections and adherence to building regulations. Similar accidents in the city have previously prompted calls for stricter enforcement of lift safety norms by the municipal corporation and fire department.

As investigations continue, the focus will be on determining whether negligence, mechanical faults, or other factors contributed to the failure. The episode serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks in vertical urban living and the importance of proactive maintenance to prevent such life-threatening incidents. No further details on the victims' identities or long-term prognoses have been released at this time.
