4.4-Magnitude Quake Shakes Eastern Nepal
Eastern Nepal rattled by 4.4-magnitude quake, no damage reported.
A 4.4-magnitude earthquake jolted Eastern Nepal late Friday night, stirring residents in multiple districts. The National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre reported the tremor struck at 11:15 pm, with its epicentre in the Maghang area of Sankhuwasabha district. While the quake sent ripples of concern through nearby regions, authorities confirmed no immediate casualties or structural damage.
Nepal’s position in a high seismic risk zone makes it prone to frequent tremors. The nation still carries scars from the catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake in April 2015, which claimed nearly 9,000 lives and left over 500,000 homes in ruins. Friday’s quake, though milder, serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability.
Local residents described feeling a brief but noticeable shaking, prompting some to step outside as a precaution. “It wasn’t too strong, but it woke us up,” said a Sankhuwasabha local. Authorities are monitoring the situation, urging residents to stay alert for potential aftershocks.
