Grisly discovery fuels fears in Guanajuato
A chilling discovery in Irapuato’s La Calera community has laid bare the brutal toll of Mexico’s cartel wars, as authorities uncovered 32 bodies in clandestine graves on a property 320 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. The Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office announced via X on Monday that forensic teams, working since July 30, have identified nearly half of the dismembered remains, found in plastic bags, with efforts ongoing to name the rest.
The gruesome find follows a June mass shooting in Irapuato that killed 12 at a street party, underscoring the region’s relentless violence. Guanajuato, Mexico’s deadliest state, logged over 1,500 homicides from January to July 2025, driven by a bloody turf war between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Santa Rosa de Lima gang. The CJNG, labeled a terrorist organization by the Trump administration, battles for control of drug and fuel trafficking routes, leaving a trail of mass graves and massacres.
Relatives of the missing, part of the “Hasta Encontrarte” collective, visited the site, desperate for answers in a country where over 132,000 people remain disappeared. “It’s been years of agony. We need closure,” said one member. The discovery, the second in Irapuato this year after 17 bodies were found in May, highlights the crisis, with 3,100 murders in Guanajuato in 2024 alone, accounting for 10.5% of Mexico’s homicides.

Civil society groups, risking their lives, often lead searches for such graves, as cartels routinely bury victims to erase evidence. The violence, fueled by black market oil and drug profits, has turned industrial hubs like Irapuato into battlegrounds, despite its economic vibrancy and tourist appeal. As investigations continue, the tragedy deepens calls for stronger action against cartel impunity.
