2026 Economic Sciences Prize Goes To Woodford And Hall For Their Research Contributions

Woodford And Hall Win 2026 Economics Prize

American economists Michael Woodford and Robert E Hall have won the 2026 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for their work on the “microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation”. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the award in Stockholm on Monday, October 12. The economists were recognised for contributions to economic theory that help explain how governments and central banks can respond to economic shocks and stabilise economic activity. The prize, the final award in this year’s Nobel announcement cycle, carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately $1.2 million.

The award recognises research that connects the decisions made by individual consumers and businesses with the performance of the wider economy. Microeconomic foundations provide a framework for understanding how households and firms respond to changes in prices, interest rates, income and expectations. These individual decisions collectively influence inflation, employment, output and economic growth. By developing models that incorporate such behaviour, economists can better analyse how economic policies affect the broader economy and how policymakers can respond when financial or economic conditions change.

Macroeconomic stabilisation refers to efforts by governments and central banks to reduce disruptive fluctuations in economic activity. Policymakers may use monetary policy, including changes to interest rates, as well as fiscal measures to address inflationary pressures, declining demand or other economic disturbances. The research recognised by the award has contributed to the theoretical framework used to analyse these interventions. Such models help policymakers assess how households and businesses may respond to policy decisions and how those responses can influence economic outcomes.

Hall is an economist associated with Stanford University, while Woodford is associated with Columbia University. Their work has contributed to the development of modern macroeconomic theory, particularly the relationship between economic behaviour and policy decisions. The recognition highlights the importance of rigorous economic modelling in understanding how decisions taken by central banks and governments can affect consumption, investment and overall economic stability. The award also reflects the continuing role of economic research in informing debates over how best to manage economic shocks and fluctuations.

The Economic Sciences prize is formally known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. It was established by Sweden’s central bank in 1968 and first awarded in 1969. Although it is commonly referred to as the Nobel Prize in Economics, it was not one of the original prizes established under Alfred Nobel’s will. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences selects the laureates, following a process similar to that used for the other Nobel Prizes. The award is presented annually to recognise research considered to have made an important contribution to economic sciences.

Last year’s Economics Prize went to Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt for explaining innovation-driven economic growth. Mokyr was recognised for identifying the conditions necessary for sustained growth through technological progress, while Aghion and Howitt were honoured for their theory of sustained growth through creative destruction. Their research examined how technological innovation and new production methods can drive long-term economic growth and improve living standards. The 2026 award shifts the focus to the foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation, recognising work that helps explain how economic policy can respond to changing conditions and limit the effects of disruptive shocks.
