19 Years Later, Victim's Rs 4,000 Loss Finally Sees Justice In Maharashtra

Maharashtra police arrest man absconding for nearly 20 years in a 2006 case involving theft of car stereo.

After nearly two decades on the run, police in Latur, Maharashtra, have arrested Babu Laxman Sankole (41), accused in a Rs 4,000 car stereo theft case from 2006. The accused, who had kept changing his residence over the years, was recently found working as a sugarcane cutter in the Kamalpur-Ujani area of Latur district.

Sankole, a resident of Budhoda village under Ausa tehsil, was taken into custody on Monday and produced before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody until January 27. He had been wanted in a theft case registered at Shivajinagar Police Station and had successfully evaded arrest for nearly 20 years, leading to the case being placed in a dormant file.

A special squad of the Latur police reopened the case and conducted meticulous investigations. Officials said that after receiving credible information about Sankole’s whereabouts on Yakatpur Road in Ausa tehsil, police laid a trap, detained him, and formally arrested him.

The theft incident had occurred on July 10, 2006, when Arvind Vitthalrao Bhosale of Shahupuri Colony, Latur, reported that an unknown thief had stolen a car stereo worth approximately Rs 4,000 from his vehicle parked outside his house. Sankole was initially arrested four days later on July 14, 2006, but was granted bail and subsequently absconded, failing to appear in court proceedings.

The revival and successful resolution of this long-pending case highlight the persistence of law enforcement in tracking fugitives, even decades after the crime. Police noted that Sankole had remained under the radar by constantly changing locations, but modern investigative efforts enabled his apprehension.

With Sankole now in judicial custody, authorities plan to proceed with the legal process, bringing closure to a case that had remained unresolved for almost 20 years and restoring public confidence in the police’s ability to pursue long-standing criminal matters.
