19-Year-Old Indian-Origin UC Santa Cruz Student Dies In Cliffside Car Crash

An Indian-origin teenager died after the car she was travelling in plunged off a cliff into the ocean near Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, California. The victim, identified as 19-year-old Alli Renee Singh, was a psychology major at the University of California, Santa Cruz and was part of the university's John R Lewis College community. She had enrolled at the university in June 2024, according to a report by NRI Pulse.

Emergency responders who arrived at the scene found the vehicle submerged off the rocky coastline with two occupants inside. Police said the male occupant managed to escape from the vehicle and sustained minor injuries. Singh, however, remained trapped and required assistance from professional divers who were called to the scene as rescue operations were launched.

Four professional divers reportedly attempted to reach Singh, who was eventually brought out of the water and transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The Santa Cruz Fire Department later confirmed that she died from her injuries. The accident occurred on April 13 near the city's well-known Steamer Lane surf break, an area along the coast that has faced increasing concerns over erosion and damage to the surrounding road infrastructure.

The section of West Cliff Drive near the crash site has reportedly been significantly affected by ongoing coastal erosion. The Los Angeles Times had reported damage in the area and concerns about the shrinking distance between the roadway and the cliff edge. The latest accident has renewed attention on safety along the coastal stretch as erosion continues to alter the landscape.

Singh's aunt, Monica Singh-Strohmeier, confirmed her death in a social media statement and asked for privacy for the family. She described Singh as a smart, loving young woman and said she had been preparing to begin her third year at UC Santa Cruz. Singh was originally from Selma in Fresno County, California, and her family is making arrangements following her death.

The fatal crash has also added to concerns over vehicle safety along parts of the Santa Cruz coastline and surrounding mountainous areas. A separate accident in June reportedly killed three people after a vehicle lost control and plunged around 400 feet off an embankment in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The incidents have renewed focus on the risks posed by unstable coastal terrain, erosion and roads located close to steep drops.
