18 Militants Killed During Separate Security Operations In Pakistan’s KP And Balochistan Provinces

18 militants killed in Pakistan operations

Pakistani security forces killed 18 militants in separate operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, according to reports carried by Pakistan's state-run media on Wednesday. The reported operations took place in North Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Mastung district of Balochistan as security forces continue counter-terrorism operations in areas that have experienced militant violence. Pakistan Television reported that 13 militants were killed during an intelligence-based operation in North Waziristan, while another five were killed in a separate engagement in Mastung. The reports said weapons and ammunition were recovered from the militants killed in the operations and that search and clearance activities were continuing in the affected areas.

According to Pakistan Television, security forces killed 13 members of what the Pakistani government refers to as “Fitna al-Khawarij” during an intelligence-based operation in North Waziristan. The operation was described as part of continuing efforts under the government's Azm-e-Istehkam counter-terrorism framework. Pakistani authorities use the term “Fitna al-Khawarij” for members of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP. The operation reportedly followed intelligence regarding the presence of militants in the area. State media did not provide further details in the report about the identities of those killed, the nature of the intelligence or whether security personnel suffered casualties during the engagement.

A separate operation was reported in Balochistan's Mastung district, where security forces killed five militants identified by Pakistan Television as belonging to “Fitna al-Hindustan”. The state broadcaster said the five were killed during an engagement with security personnel. Weapons and ammunition were reportedly recovered from the militants following the operation. As with the North Waziristan operation, the authorities said search and clearance activities were underway in the area. Such operations are aimed at checking whether additional militants or weapons remain in the vicinity following an engagement. The available state media reports did not provide further details about the identities of the five militants or the circumstances that led to the operation.

The reported operations come against the backdrop of continued militant violence in Pakistan's northwestern and southwestern regions. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has experienced repeated attacks and counter-terrorism operations involving the Pakistani Taliban and other armed groups. Balochistan has also faced violence involving separatist and militant organisations, creating a separate security challenge for the authorities. The two provinces share borders with areas that have historically been difficult for security forces to monitor and have witnessed repeated military and intelligence operations. The latest reports indicate that Pakistani authorities are continuing to rely on intelligence-based actions and follow-up searches as part of their broader counter-terrorism strategy.

Pakistan's political leadership welcomed the reported operations. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended the security forces for their actions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, according to Radio Pakistan. Such statements are routinely issued by the country's leadership following counter-terrorism operations in which militants are reported to have been killed. The government has continued to emphasise the role of security forces in tackling armed groups amid concerns over increased militant activity. The latest operations therefore form part of a wider campaign involving intelligence gathering, targeted operations and subsequent clearance activities in areas considered vulnerable to militant activity.

The reports from state media put the number of militants killed in the two separate operations at 18, with 13 killed in North Waziristan and five in Mastung. The recovery of weapons and ammunition was also reported, while security personnel continued search operations in the affected areas. However, the details available were based on statements and reports from Pakistani authorities and state media, and independent verification of the battlefield claims was not provided in the material. The operations nevertheless underscore the continuing security challenges faced by Pakistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. With both provinces witnessing militant attacks in recent years, authorities are expected to maintain counter-terrorism operations and surveillance aimed at disrupting armed groups and preventing further attacks.
