120-Foot Fall, A Second Chance: Bystander’s Quick Action Helps Save US Man
Bystander performs CPR after man falls 120 feet into creek.
A North Carolina man survived a roughly 120-foot fall into McDonald Creek at Glacier National Park after a bystander pulled him from the water and performed CPR. Ken Nurse was visiting the park with his wife, family and friends when he fell from an overlook on Thursday, August 13. The incident occurred after Nurse moved closer to the edge while looking for a better view.
According to reports, Nurse and his family had been taking photographs when his wife, Renae Nurse, returned to their car to warm up. Ken then moved toward the edge of the overlook, where the ground suddenly gave way beneath him. He fell approximately 120 feet, going over a series of waterfalls before landing in McDonald Creek.
A bystander later found Nurse face down in the water and entered the creek to pull him toward a shallow area. CPR was performed, and he subsequently regained spontaneous circulation. Glacier National Park rangers then provided care while a Two Bear Air Rescue helicopter arrived at the scene to assist with the emergency evacuation.

Nurse was secured by the rescue crew and lifted from the creek before being transferred to a medical helicopter. He was taken to a hospital for further treatment and spent two days on a ventilator. Reports indicated that he sustained several cracked ribs, a compound elbow fracture that required surgery and fluid in his lungs.
Nurse later expressed gratitude to everyone involved in his rescue, stressing that he believed he should not have survived the fall. Two Bear Air Rescue also credited the bystander's rapid response, particularly the decision to enter the water and provide emergency assistance. Nurse's family also thanked the park rangers, hospital staff, rescue crews, friends and others who helped during the emergency.
On August 20, Renae shared an update that the family planned to fly home the following day. She described the change in Nurse's condition over the preceding week as remarkable, noting that only a week earlier the family was uncertain whether he would recover enough to leave the ventilator. She also identified the bystander as Josh and thanked him publicly for his role in helping save Ken's life.
