10 Killed, Around 100 Injured In Russian Strike On Ukraine's Kyiv

A Russian strike on an arms exhibition site near Kyiv has killed at least 10 people and injured around 100 others, Ukrainian officials said, raising fresh concerns over safety measures at military-related events during the ongoing war. The attack targeted a shooting range hosting an exhibition featuring defence equipment and drones, with Ukrainian authorities launching an investigation into the decision to hold the event in the area.

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko announced a criminal inquiry to determine who approved the event and whether proper security assessments were carried out under martial law conditions. Officials are examining whether organisers adequately considered the risks of gathering large numbers of people at a location that could become a target during the conflict. The strike has sparked criticism from defence industry figures and government representatives.

An AFP reporter at the scene described seeing bodies covered with black sheets near the shooting range, while promotional tents and drone displays remained inside the damaged facility. A screen at the venue continued playing a defence company promotional video after the attack. Nearby residential areas were also affected, with homes damaged and debris scattered across the area following the explosion.

Russia said it had targeted an arms exhibition displaying Ukrainian and foreign-made unmanned aerial vehicles. Russian officials claimed the drones showcased at the event were being used for attacks on civilian targets inside Russian territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strike involved a ballistic missile and acknowledged that holding such an event in the area during wartime created serious security concerns.

The attack has prompted calls for stronger safety protocols within Ukraine’s defence sector. Presidential adviser Sergiy Beskrestnov criticized organisers who hold events without adequate shelter arrangements, while Andriy Grytseniuk, head of the state-backed defence group Brave1, urged defence industry participants to urgently review and strengthen security procedures. Several officials questioned whether the exhibition should have been organised so close to residential communities.

Local residents expressed anger and shock following the strike. Local official Alla Lakhmaniuk said the municipality had not approved the event and questioned why such a gathering was held near civilian homes. Residents reported damaged roofs, broken windows, and destruction caused by the blast. Natalia Perevalova, whose home was damaged, said she was thankful that her grandchildren were not present at the time of the attack. The incident has intensified debate in Ukraine over balancing defence activities with civilian safety during wartime.
