Canada Eyes Stronger Trade Ties With India Through October Business Mission

Canada's October business mission aims to strengthen trade relations.

Canada's Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, will lead a business delegation to India from October 12 to 16, as Ottawa seeks to deepen commercial ties with one of its fastest-growing trading partners. The visit is expected to bring together Canadian businesses and Indian stakeholders to explore new investment opportunities, strengthen economic cooperation and support the shared objective of significantly expanding bilateral trade over the coming years.

The proposed trade mission comes amid efforts by both countries to rebuild and enhance economic engagement following a period of diplomatic strain. According to officials, the delegation will include representatives from a range of sectors looking to expand their presence in the Indian market and forge new business partnerships. The visit is expected to feature meetings with Indian government officials, industry leaders and business organisations aimed at promoting trade, investment and collaboration across key industries.

Minister Sidhu has said the trade mission forms part of Canada's broader strategy to diversify its international economic partnerships and tap into India's rapidly growing economy. The two countries have set an ambitious target of doubling bilateral trade by 2030, with both sides identifying areas such as clean technology, agriculture, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, infrastructure and education as sectors with strong potential for cooperation.

India and Canada have maintained significant commercial ties despite political challenges in recent years. Bilateral trade has continued across goods and services, while Indian companies remain active investors in Canada and Canadian pension funds and businesses continue to hold substantial investments in India. Business groups in both countries have consistently advocated for stronger economic engagement, arguing that trade and investment cooperation can continue even as diplomatic issues are addressed through official channels.

The October delegation is expected to provide a platform for companies from both countries to explore joint ventures, technology partnerships and market access opportunities. Industry interactions, business-to-business meetings and investment discussions are likely to form a key part of the programme, with an emphasis on creating long-term commercial relationships. Canadian businesses are particularly interested in India's expanding manufacturing base, digital economy and infrastructure development, while Indian firms continue to view Canada as an important destination for investment, innovation and higher education partnerships.

The planned visit signals a renewed focus on strengthening economic cooperation between India and Canada at a time when both countries are seeking to diversify global trade relationships. While broader diplomatic issues remain under discussion, the trade mission reflects a shared recognition of the economic opportunities available through closer business engagement. If successful, the October visit could contribute to expanding bilateral commerce and advancing the long-term goal of doubling trade between the two countries by the end of the decade.
