A major oil refinery in the northern Israeli city of Haifa was struck on Monday amid continued missile attacks in the region, sparking fires and raising concerns over energy infrastructure amid the ongoing Israel‑Iran conflict. The incident occurred at the Bazan Oil Refineries complex, one of Israel’s largest fuel processing hubs, during a barrage of missiles fired toward northern Israel.
Initial reports from Israeli media and Agence France‑Presse showed plumes of thick black smoke rising over the refinery following an impact at the facility’s industrial area. It was not immediately clear whether the site was hit directly by an incoming missile, by debris from an intercepted projectile, or by falling remnants of air‑defence intercepts during the barrage.
Israel’s Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that an industrial building and a fuel tanker within the refinery grounds were struck, causing a substantial blaze. Emergency crews worked to control the fire, which involved a gasoline storage tank containing thousands of cubic metres of fuel. Firefighters were seen pumping fuel out of the tank to mitigate further risk. Authorities reported no casualties and no immediate threat to the public or nearby communities.

Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen said the refinery’s key production infrastructure was not meaningfully damaged and that fuel supplies were not expected to be affected, despite the localized impact. The Bazan refinery has previously been hit in earlier missile barrages this month, although damage in past incidents has generally been limited.
The attack underscores the widening scope of the conflict between Iran‑aligned forces and Israel. Missile barrages linked to Iran and its allied group Hezbollah in Lebanon have increasingly targeted strategic infrastructure in northern Israel, triggering air‑raid sirens and civilian precautions. While emergency response teams continue to assess the extent of damage, the refinery strike highlights the vulnerability of energy facilities in the intensifying conflict, which has already disrupted regional stability and drawn international attention to risks facing civilian infrastructure amid sustained hostilities.
