Devdutt Padikkal Reveals KL Rahul's Unusual Travel Habit

Padikkal reveals why cricketers like KL Rahul travel with mattresses.

Indian cricketer Devdutt Padikkal has revealed why many professional athletes, including teammate KL Rahul, travel with their own sleep accessories while on tour, highlighting the crucial role of quality sleep in performance and recovery. Speaking during an interview with Humans of Bombay, Padikkal said it is common for elite athletes to carry personal mattresses, pillows and other sleep essentials to maintain consistent rest regardless of where they are playing. His remarks offered an insight into the meticulous recovery routines followed by modern sports professionals.

Padikkal shared that he has personally seen KL Rahul travel with his own mattress during cricket tours. He added that several athletes also carry their own pillows to ensure familiarity and comfort while staying in different hotels around the world. According to him, such practices have become increasingly common among elite sportspersons, as maintaining consistent sleep quality is considered a vital component of athletic preparation and long-term performance.

Explaining the importance of these habits, Padikkal said athletes spend a significant portion of their day sleeping, making recovery one of the most important aspects of professional sport. He noted that proper sleep allows the body to repair muscles, recover from physical exertion and prepare for the demands of training and competition. As a result, many players pay close attention to their sleeping environment, treating it with the same importance as fitness training and nutrition.

Sports scientists have long identified quality sleep as a key factor in improving athletic performance, reaction time, decision-making and injury prevention. Consistent sleep routines are also known to enhance mental focus and reduce fatigue during demanding schedules involving frequent travel across different time zones. To minimise disruptions caused by unfamiliar hotel beds and changing environments, many elite athletes choose to recreate their preferred sleeping conditions while travelling.

International cricketers, in particular, often spend several months each year away from home, moving between countries for bilateral series and franchise tournaments. The demanding travel schedules, changing climates and packed match calendars make recovery an essential part of maintaining peak performance throughout the season. Teams increasingly rely on sports science experts to monitor sleep, workload management and overall player well-being as part of their performance programmes.

Padikkal's comments provide a glimpse into the growing emphasis on recovery in modern sport, where marginal improvements can make a significant difference at the highest level. While carrying personal mattresses or pillows may appear unusual to many, athletes view these measures as practical investments in their health and performance. The discussion also highlights how professional cricket has evolved beyond training alone, with sleep, nutrition and recovery now regarded as equally important elements of success.
