Above-Normal Heatwave Days Forecast For East, Central India Till June

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a nationwide alert warning of intense heatwave conditions between April and June 2026, urging states and Union Territories to step up preparedness as forecasts point to above-normal temperatures across large parts of the country.

The advisory, based on projections from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), indicates that eastern, central, and northwestern regions, along with parts of the southern peninsula, are likely to witness prolonged spells of extreme heat. Authorities have been asked to activate heat action plans and ensure coordinated responses to mitigate health risks, especially as heatwaves become more frequent and severe due to changing climate patterns.

To handle the anticipated surge in heat-related illnesses, states are ramping up healthcare readiness. Hospitals have been directed to establish dedicated heatstroke management units, stock essential supplies such as oral rehydration solutions (ORS), and train medical staff to respond quickly to emergencies. These measures are aimed at preventing dehydration, heat exhaustion, and life-threatening heatstroke, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Several states have already begun implementing localized interventions. In Delhi, authorities have introduced heat action measures including work-hour restrictions for outdoor labourers, water distribution points, and awareness drives. Schools in multiple regions have adjusted timings or advanced summer vacations to protect students, while advisories promoting hydration and reduced sun exposure are being widely circulated.

Experts have stressed that early preparedness and public awareness remain critical in reducing casualties. With temperatures already crossing 40–44°C in several regions and rising further in the coming weeks, officials are emphasizing proactive strategies, including community outreach and real-time monitoring of heat-related cases.

The warning underscores growing concerns over the public health impact of extreme weather in India. Past data and recent trends suggest that coordinated heat action plans—such as those implemented in cities like Nagpur—can significantly reduce mortality, reinforcing the importance of sustained preparedness as the country braces for a challenging summer season.
