About 40 Passengers Leave Ship Amid Hantavirus Outbreak At St Helena Stop

About 40 passengers left cruise ship after hantavirus outbreak stop at St Helena.

Around 40 passengers have disembarked from a cruise ship affected by a suspected hantavirus-related health outbreak during a stop at St. Helena, a remote British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, according to Dutch authorities.

The development was confirmed by the Dutch foreign ministry, which stated that the group included individuals connected to earlier medical cases linked to the outbreak. Among those who left the vessel was the wife of a Dutch national who reportedly died earlier in the incident, along with other passengers requiring medical attention.

In a letter sent to parliament, Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen said that some of the disembarked passengers included individuals who were either already hospitalised or in need of urgent care. He noted that a Dutch woman is currently being treated in South Africa, while a Swiss national is also receiving medical support.

Authorities have not disclosed the current whereabouts of all passengers who left the ship, and details about their onward travel or medical status remain unclear. The situation has raised concerns due to the remote location of St. Helena, which has limited medical infrastructure and relies heavily on external evacuation routes for serious cases.

Health officials have not publicly confirmed the full scale or source of the outbreak, but hantavirus infections are typically associated with rodent exposure and can cause severe respiratory and systemic illness. The presence of multiple suspected cases on a cruise vessel has prompted heightened monitoring and precautionary measures.

Investigations and medical assessments are ongoing as authorities work to trace exposure routes and ensure containment. The cruise ship remains under observation, with further updates expected as international health and maritime agencies continue their coordination.
