Revised Passport Fees Coming From July 1, Students To Face Higher Application Costs
Passport fees increase from July 1 onwards.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced a revision in passport application fees that will come into effect from July 1, 2026, marking an important update for Indian citizens planning international travel, overseas education or employment. The revised structure applies to fresh applications, renewals, Tatkal processing and replacement of lost or damaged passports. The change is expected to have a direct impact on students and frequent travellers who rely on timely issuance of travel documents.
Under the updated fee structure, adult applicants seeking a standard 36-page passport will now be required to pay Rs 2,500 under the normal processing category, while the Tatkal service will cost Rs 5,000. For those opting for a 60-page passport, the revised charges have been set at Rs 3,500 under normal processing and Rs 6,000 under Tatkal service. The revision reflects an upward adjustment in fees across categories, particularly affecting applicants who choose expedited processing for urgent travel needs.
For minors below 18 years of age, the revised fee for a 36-page passport has been fixed at Rs 1,750 under the normal application category and Rs 4,250 under the Tatkal category. The MEA has also increased charges for the issuance of passports in cases of loss, damage or reissue, though detailed category-wise breakdowns for these specific services are expected to be released through official notifications. The updated fee structure applies uniformly across passport offices in India and through Indian missions abroad.

The revision is particularly relevant for students planning to pursue higher education overseas, as a valid passport is the foundational requirement for university admissions, visa applications and international travel arrangements. With rising application costs, families may need to reassess their financial planning, especially for those considering urgent applications under the Tatkal scheme. Early application is likely to become more important to avoid additional expenses and potential delays during peak travel and admission seasons.
Officials have advised applicants to apply well in advance of their planned travel dates to avoid last-minute complications and higher processing costs associated with expedited services. The government is expected to continue streamlining passport issuance procedures through digital platforms and service improvements aimed at faster delivery and reduced administrative delays. Citizens are encouraged to verify details through official MEA and Passport Seva channels before applying, as accurate documentation and timely submission remain key to avoiding processing issues under the revised fee regime.
