Middle East Conflict Hits India's Streets as Cooking Fuel Costs Push Vendors Out

Surging cooking fuel costs tied to the Gulf conflict are pushing Delhi's street vendors out.

A cluster of street food stalls outside the Kashmiri Gate is emerging as a stark symbol of India’s deepening energy crisis, triggered by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Once bustling with vendors serving affordable meals to commuters, parts of the area now lie nearly deserted, as rising fuel costs force small business owners to shut shop and return to their hometowns.

The disruption stems from the ongoing conflict in the Persian Gulf and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil and gas supplies. The blockage has sent shockwaves through energy markets, driving up prices across Asia, including India. As cooking fuel becomes increasingly expensive, small vendors—already operating on thin margins—are finding it difficult to sustain daily operations.

Vendors who remain in the Kashmiri Gate area report a steady exodus of fellow stall owners, many of whom can no longer afford liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) used for cooking. The rising costs have not only reduced profitability but also affected daily survival, pushing migrant workers and informal sector participants out of urban centres. This trend reflects a broader economic strain, with higher energy prices beginning to impact manufacturing, transport, and other key sectors.

The situation underscores India’s vulnerability to global energy disruptions, particularly due to its heavy reliance on imported oil. Analysts warn that prolonged instability in the Middle East could intensify inflationary pressures and slow economic activity. For now, the empty food carts of New Delhi serve as a visible reminder of how global crises can quickly translate into local hardships for millions dependent on daily earnings.
