Jaishankar-Rubio Meeting at G7 Focuses on Global Security and Economic Concerns

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Affairs Ministerial on Friday, describing the discussion as a “useful talk.” The meeting focused on shared global security concerns and opportunities for international cooperation, according to statements from both leaders.

Jaishankar, in a post on X, noted that the discussions addressed critical issues such as freedom of navigation, cross-border threats, and the role of critical minerals in global economic security. He also highlighted the linkages between narcotics and terrorism as an area of concern during his deliberations at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Earlier in the day, he had a brief meeting with Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

The US State Department confirmed that Rubio is meeting with foreign ministers from partner nations to deliberate on global security challenges, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, tensions in the Middle East, and threats to peace and stability worldwide. Prior to his arrival in France, Rubio described the agenda on X, emphasizing discussions on security concerns and opportunities for cooperation.

Jaishankar also addressed the second session of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, highlighting the need for UN Security Council reforms, streamlined peacekeeping operations, and strengthened humanitarian supply chains. He drew attention to challenges faced by the Global South, including energy shortages, fertilizer supply issues, and food security, stressing the importance of resilient trade corridors in the face of ongoing West Asian conflicts.

In his remarks, Jaishankar noted India’s efforts to enhance connectivity and trade through free trade agreements with the European Union, EFTA members, and the United Kingdom. He expressed appreciation for the support shown by G7 partners for India’s International Multimodal Economic Corridor (IMEC) initiative, aimed at improving global supply chain resilience.

The meeting between Jaishankar and Rubio underscores India’s proactive engagement in multilateral forums and its commitment to collaborative solutions for pressing global security and economic challenges. Both leaders emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation to address complex geopolitical issues.
