The Pentagon has directed American defence contractors to submit plans within 21 days for accelerating weapons production amid concerns that months of conflict with Iran have reduced key US munitions inventories. The order calls for faster deliveries and a significant expansion in the manufacture of critical military systems.
Deputy Defence Secretary Steve Feinberg issued the directive to defence industry executives on Wednesday, according to a memorandum obtained by The Washington Post. Feinberg reportedly said development cycles lasting several years were no longer acceptable and asked companies to identify ways to increase production capacity while shortening programme schedules.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed on Saturday that the memorandum was authentic. He said the Defence Department had spent the previous week working to speed up the weapons procurement process. The initiative is intended to address immediate stockpile concerns while supporting the Pentagon’s broader plans to modernise defence acquisition and production.

The push follows the extensive use of advanced missile interceptors during the United States’ five-month conflict with Iran. The sustained military operations reportedly left American inventories of some critical weapons below their pre-conflict levels, raising questions about the country’s ability to replenish stocks while maintaining readiness for other potential security challenges.
An analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, cited by The Washington Post, estimated that the United States held approximately 2,330 Patriot interceptors before the conflict. According to the think tank’s figures, the inventory declined to about 1,030 by the April ceasefire and later fell to an estimated range of 759 to 827 following renewed fighting.
The Pentagon’s demand for accelerated production also aligns with a wider modernisation initiative and preparations for its fiscal year 2028 budget request. Defence companies will now be expected to explain how they can overcome manufacturing constraints, expand capacity and deliver complex weapon systems more quickly. The reported stock estimates have not been independently confirmed by the Pentagon.
