Sitharaman Defends Government Action On NEET Row, Says Students' Year Was Protected

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday defended the Centre’s response to the NEET controversy, stating that the government acted swiftly after allegations of examination irregularities surfaced and prioritised ensuring that students did not lose an academic year. She said the government’s approach was focused on protecting the interests of candidates affected by the controversy while taking necessary corrective measures.

Speaking at the Business Leadership Awards event, Sitharaman said the government’s primary concern was to minimise disruption for students preparing for higher education admissions. She highlighted that timely decisions were taken to address the situation and ensure that academic schedules were not severely impacted due to the allegations surrounding the medical entrance examination. "The focus was on ensuring students' year wasn't wasted," Sitharaman said, while explaining the Centre’s position on the issue.

She added that the government had a responsibility to take appropriate steps, including conducting a re-examination where required, to maintain fairness for students who appeared for the test. The Finance Minister also said the government did not dismiss or undermine the protests organised by students following the controversy. She emphasised that young people have the democratic right to raise their concerns and that the administration listened to the voices of students affected by the issue.

"Youngsters' protest will make a difference," Sitharaman said, adding that the government needs to remain connected with the aspirations, expectations and concerns of young Indians. She stated that addressing issues raised by students is essential for maintaining trust in institutions and ensuring transparency in major examinations. The NEET controversy triggered widespread protests across several parts of the country after allegations of paper leaks and irregularities emerged.

Students and opposition parties demanded accountability and questioned the examination process, leading to calls for investigations and corrective action from authorities. The Centre has maintained that it took necessary steps after receiving reports of irregularities and worked to protect the interests of genuine candidates. The government has initiated investigations into alleged malpractice cases and assured students that action would be taken against those found responsible.

Sitharaman’s remarks come amid continued debate over examination reforms, transparency and accountability in India’s competitive entrance examinations. She stressed that the government must balance addressing grievances with ensuring that the academic future of millions of students is not affected by such controversies. The Finance Minister reiterated that engaging with young citizens and understanding their concerns remains an important responsibility of the government. She said the response to the NEET issue reflected the Centre’s effort to act quickly while safeguarding the interests of students preparing for their future academic and professional journeys.
