Kharge Calls For All-Party Meeting Over Women’s Quota Rollout Amid Poll Concerns

Kharge flags political mileage in women’s quota rollout.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has raised concerns over the timing and implementation of the women’s reservation rollout, alleging that it is being used for political advantage ahead of elections and calling for an all-party meeting to ensure broader consensus on the issue.

Speaking on the matter, Kharge said that while the Congress supports the principle of greater representation for women in legislatures, the process of implementation must be transparent, inclusive, and free from electoral considerations. He suggested that any perception of selective timing could undermine the credibility of such a significant constitutional reform.

He also urged the government to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the roadmap for implementing the women’s quota, including timelines, delimitation-related concerns, and safeguards to ensure fair execution across states. According to him, decisions of such national importance should not be perceived as unilateral or politically driven.

The remarks come amid ongoing political debate over the rollout of the women’s reservation framework, which has been widely discussed across party lines. While several parties have welcomed the move in principle, differences remain over implementation mechanisms and timing, particularly in relation to electoral cycles and constituency restructuring.

Kharge further argued that meaningful empowerment of women requires not only legislative quotas but also stronger participation in governance structures and decision-making roles at all levels. He said that the Congress would continue to push for an inclusive approach that reflects broad political agreement.

The statement adds to the continuing national conversation on gender representation in politics, with parties expressing differing views on how best to operationalise the reform while maintaining electoral fairness and institutional consensus.
