Fugitive Bangladeshi Activist Arrested at Delhi Airport Over Hindu Cop's Lynching
Bangladesh activist wanted for cop murder arrested at Delhi airport and deported.
A Bangladeshi student activist wanted in connection with the murder of a police officer has been arrested at Delhi airport while allegedly attempting to flee to Europe. The accused, identified as Ahmed Raza Hasan Mehdi, has since been deported to Bangladesh, officials said.
Mehdi, a resident of Habiganj, is accused in the killing of Sub-Inspector Santosh Chowdhury during violent unrest on August 5, 2024. Authorities said he was detained at the airport based on inputs linking him to the case before immigration authorities initiated deportation proceedings.
Investigators allege that Chowdhury was attacked during a violent assault on the Baniachang Police Station amid nationwide protests that coincided with the political turmoil that forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee the country. Multiple incidents of arson and looting were reported across Bangladesh on the same day.

According to sources, a viral video had earlier surfaced in which Mehdi allegedly claimed responsibility for the officer’s killing. During the unrest, protesters and villagers reportedly surrounded the police station and set it ablaze after police firing left several civilians dead, leading to the lynching of the sub-inspector.
The case drew widespread attention in Bangladesh, particularly because Chowdhury had married less than a year before the incident, and his wife gave birth to their son three months after his death. Authorities in Bangladesh are expected to proceed with legal action against Mehdi following his deportation.
