CM Vijay Unveils ₹75,000 Cooperative Credit Relief For Tamil Nadu’s Farming Community
Vijay Announces ₹75,000 Farm Loan Waiver
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday announced a full waiver of cooperative farm loans up to ₹75,000, providing financial relief to a large number of farmers across the state. Speaking in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Vijay also announced relief for farmers whose cooperative loans fall between ₹75,000 and ₹1 lakh. According to news agency PTI, the measures are expected to benefit 13.34 lakh farmers. Vijay said the decision was taken despite financial constraints faced by the state government.
He said the government had decided to provide additional support of ₹953.06 crore to farmers as part of its efforts to strengthen the agricultural community. The announcement was made while highlighting the importance of farmers to the state and the country. The chief minister described farmers as a “lifeline” and stressed their contribution to the economy and food security. The loan waiver is focused on agricultural borrowing through cooperative institutions, offering relief to eligible borrowers within the specified loan limits.
The measure is expected to ease repayment pressures on farmers who have been facing financial challenges. Under the announcement, cooperative farm loans of up to ₹75,000 will be fully waived. Vijay also announced a waiver for loans in the range of ₹75,000 to ₹1 lakh, extending the benefit to borrowers with comparatively higher outstanding amounts. The government said the overall package would cover 13.34 lakh farmers, making it a significant relief measure for the agricultural sector in Tamil Nadu.

The additional allocation of ₹953.06 crore is expected to provide further financial support to farmers alongside the loan waiver. The announcement comes against the backdrop of continued discussions over farm incomes, rural indebtedness and the need for greater government assistance to agricultural communities. Cooperative credit remains an important source of financing for farmers in many parts of the state.
Vijay’s announcement in the Assembly signals a renewed focus by the Tamil Nadu government on providing financial assistance to the farming community. By targeting cooperative farm loans and extending support to borrowers with loans up to ₹1 lakh, the government aims to reduce repayment burdens for eligible farmers. The decision is also likely to have an impact on rural households dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods.
The chief minister’s statement places farmers at the centre of the government’s support measures, with the loan waiver and additional funding forming part of its broader assistance to the agricultural sector. With 13.34 lakh farmers expected to benefit, the scheme represents a substantial financial intervention. Further details on eligibility, implementation and the process for extending the waiver are expected to determine how quickly the announced relief reaches beneficiaries.
