Assam Assembly: CM Sarma Urges Speaker to Admit Adjournment Motion on Zubeen Garg Tragedy

CM personally intervenes as opposition demands immediate debate on singer’s mysterious demise.

In a highly unusual and dramatic development on the opening day of the Assam Legislative Assembly’s winter session, Speaker Biswajit Daimary permitted an adjournment motion moved by the opposition to discuss the still-unexplained death of Assam’s beloved singer-composer Zubeen Garg, following a direct and unexpected intervention by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who urged the Chair to admit the motion without procedural delay.

The sequence began immediately after the House paid obituary references, including to Zubeen Garg himself. Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia of the Congress and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi simultaneously rose to seek permission for their respective adjournment motions on the same subject. Normally such motions trigger lengthy arguments on technical admissibility, but before the Speaker could invite those submissions, Chief Minister Sarma stood up and made a remarkable appeal that momentarily stunned the House.

Acknowledging widespread public anguish and lingering questions surrounding the tragedy, Sarma told the Speaker that the government was “equally seized of the matter” and fully recognised the urgency felt across Assam. In a conciliatory gesture, he declared that no member from the ruling benches would speak during the debate and that the government would confine itself to presenting an official reply only at the end, while requesting that several urgent bills and supplementary demands for grants be deferred and taken up later in the day.

Speaker Biswajit Daimary promptly accepted the Chief Minister’s request, formally admitting the adjournment motion and suspending the day’s original legislative agenda. While postponing the pending business, he issued a clear directive to all members to strictly refrain from any remark or allegation that might influence or hamper the ongoing investigation, underlining the sensitive nature of the discussion.

Zubeen Garg, widely revered as the cultural heartbeat of modern Assam, had died on September 19 while swimming in the sea during a visit to Singapore, under circumstances that continue to raise serious doubts. A Special Investigation Team formed by the Assam Police is probing every detail of the incident, as the state awaits answers to one of the most painful episodes in its recent history.
