Yogi Unveils 6 New Forensic Labs in UP

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the construction of six new forensic laboratories, bringing the state’s total to 18, a significant leap from the four outdated labs before 2017. Speaking at the inauguration of a three-day international summit on cyber warfare and forensics in Lucknow on Monday, Adityanath urged the UP Police to embrace modern technologies to create a safer, tech-driven society.

The summit, marking the third foundation day of the Uttar Pradesh State Institute of Forensic Sciences (UPSIFS), highlighted the state’s advancements in forensic capabilities. Adityanath revealed that mobile forensic units now operate in all 75 districts, with cyber police stations established statewide and cyber help desks in 1,587 police stations, supported by master trainers. Since July 2024, forensic evidence has been mandatory for crimes carrying over seven years’ punishment, strengthening investigations.

Adityanath also inaugurated the Padma Shri Dr. Lalji Singh Advanced DNA Diagnostic Centre, an AI, Drone, and Robotics Lab, and the Atal Library, while distributing smart tablets to students and flagging off 75 mobile forensic vans. He noted that technology has reduced the time to apprehend criminals from years to 24-48 hours, citing the UP Police’s transformation, including their successful use of technology during the Maha Kumbh.

The chief minister emphasized ongoing efforts to modernize the country’s largest police force, with plans for a cyber headquarters to combat cybercrime. He called on the police to prepare for future challenges, ensuring their legacy endures. The event saw the presence of DGP Rajeev Krishna, Principal Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad, and other senior officials, underscoring the state’s commitment to technological advancement in law enforcement.
