Women Government Employees in Mumbai Get Flexible Office Timings Under New Scheme

Maharashtra introduces flexible office hours for Mumbai women government employees to reduce rush hour travel stress.

The Government of Maharashtra has introduced a flexible working hours initiative titled “Come Early, Go Early” for female state government employees in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The move is aimed at easing the daily commute for women who travel on the city’s overcrowded public transport network, particularly during peak hours.

Under the scheme, women employees can report to work between 9:15 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. and leave the office earlier by the same amount of time. The flexibility is capped at 30 minutes, allowing employees to adjust their schedule slightly to avoid the most congested periods of travel. Officials say the measure is intended to provide relief to women who face difficulties commuting during rush hours.

The initiative was announced by newly appointed Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar during her maiden speech in the state’s legislative council. She said the state government remains committed to promoting the welfare and empowerment of women and creating a society where women have equal opportunities, safety, and respect.

According to the government, the scheme specifically targets the challenges faced by women commuting through Mumbai’s busy suburban transport network. Millions of passengers use the city’s trains and other public transport daily, often leading to severe overcrowding during morning and evening peak hours.

Authorities clarified that while the flexible schedule allows women employees to adjust their office timings, it must not interfere with their official responsibilities. Employees opting for the scheme will still be expected to complete their duties and maintain productivity.

The government also noted that in situations involving critical assignments—such as legislative duties, court-related work, or urgent administrative tasks—employees may be required to stay beyond the flexible schedule if needed. Officials say the initiative is part of broader efforts to improve workplace conditions and support working women across the state.
