Woman Attacked In UP’s Bithoor For Rejecting Proposal, Ex-IAS Officer’s Son Arrested

Man arrested for allegedly assaulting woman over rejected proposal.

The son of a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman with a brick after she refused his marriage proposal in Bithoor, Uttar Pradesh. The victim, a widow employed at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K), suffered serious injuries to her head and face following the alleged attack and is undergoing treatment at Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur. The accused, identified as Devashish Nigam, is the son of retired IAS officer Chandra Nigam. According to police officials and the First Information Report (FIR), the incident took place on Saturday when Nigam allegedly picked up the woman in his car from near the IIT-Kanpur campus and drove towards Brahm Ghat in Bithoor.

Police said the two were involved in a conversation during which Nigam allegedly pressured the woman to marry him. According to the FIR, the woman refused the proposal, following which an argument reportedly broke out between the two. Police allege that the disagreement escalated and Nigam attacked the woman with a brick, causing severe injuries. The woman was later found injured and was taken for medical treatment. Police said she remained unconscious for nearly 24 hours before regaining consciousness at the hospital.

The victim's sister has alleged that Nigam had been repeatedly pressuring her sister to marry him and had issued threats in the past. She claimed that the assault was linked to the woman's continued refusal to accept the marriage proposal. Police are examining these allegations as part of the investigation and are recording statements from the victim, her family members and other people who may have information about the case. Following the complaint, police registered a case against Nigam and arrested him. Authorities said the investigation is underway to verify the sequence of events and collect evidence related to the alleged assault.

Investigators are also expected to examine available evidence, including statements, medical reports and other material relevant to the case. The incident has drawn attention because of the alleged nature of the attack and the repeated claims of harassment made by the victim's family. Cases involving unwanted proposals, threats and violence against women have remained a major concern for law enforcement agencies, with officials repeatedly emphasising the importance of addressing complaints of harassment at an early stage to prevent escalation. Police officials said appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. The accused will face further proceedings under the relevant sections of the law, while the victim continues to receive medical care for her injuries.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the specific charges filed against Nigam. The case has also highlighted concerns around women's safety in public and workplace environments, especially for individuals facing persistent harassment or intimidation. Experts and officials have often stressed the need for stronger awareness, timely reporting mechanisms and swift action by authorities in such cases. As the investigation progresses, police are expected to gather more evidence and submit their findings before the court. Meanwhile, the victim's family is awaiting further developments as she recovers from the injuries sustained in the alleged attack. The accused remains in police custody following his arrest.
