West Bengal Assembly Dissolved After Political Deadlock Despite CM Stand

West Bengal Assembly dissolved amid political standoff situation

The West Bengal Legislative Assembly was formally dissolved on Thursday following the expiry of its term, bringing an end to a constitutional and political stand-off that had persisted since the declaration of election results earlier this week. The dissolution was ordered by Governor C.V. Ananda Bose under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution of India, which empowers the Governor to dissolve a state assembly upon the completion of its tenure or under prescribed circumstances.

According to the official notification, the Assembly was dissolved with effect from May 7, 2026, marking the conclusion of the term of the House constituted in May 2021. The move came after outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her cabinet reportedly declined to tender resignation immediately following the Trinamool Congress’s performance in the recently concluded state elections, the results of which were declared on May 4.

The dissolution effectively ended days of political uncertainty in the state, which had seen conflicting interpretations of constitutional procedure regarding government formation and transition of power. With the Assembly no longer in existence, administrative processes for the formation of the new government are now expected to proceed under constitutional provisions.

In parallel developments, law enforcement agencies continued investigations into the killing of Chandranath Rath, personal assistant to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. Police recovered one of the two motorcycles allegedly used in the incident near Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district. Officials said CCTV footage from the area is being examined, although no arrests have been made so far.

Political activity in the state has also intensified ahead of the formation of the new government. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata to oversee proceedings related to the BJP legislature party meeting, where the new Leader of the Opposition will be selected. The swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister is expected to take place on Saturday at the Brigade Parade Ground.

Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution grants the Governor the authority to dissolve a state legislative assembly, typically upon the completion of its term or when a government loses its mandate. The provision forms a key part of constitutional mechanisms governing transitions of power at the state level, ensuring continuity and procedural clarity during periods of political change.
