Washington State Packaging Facility Explosion Kills Five, Eight Still Missing

A deadly explosion at a packaging facility in Longview, Washington, has left five people dead, eight others missing, and several injured, according to local emergency officials. The blast occurred on Tuesday morning at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. plant, triggering a large-scale emergency response and prompting hazardous materials teams to secure the site. Authorities have confirmed that there is no immediate threat to the surrounding community, although rescue and recovery operations are still ongoing.

The explosion took place after the rupture of a storage tank containing white liquor, a highly caustic chemical solution used in the paper manufacturing process to soften wood pulp. The incident occurred inside a facility that produces large volumes of paperboard and pulp used in packaging products such as cartons and cups. Officials described the blast as powerful enough to cause significant structural damage and endanger workers across multiple sections of the plant.

Emergency responders said that at least 10 additional individuals, including a firefighter, were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Fire Battalion Chief Mike Gorsuch confirmed that several people remain unaccounted for as search-and-rescue teams continue to comb through the damaged facility. Specialized hazardous material units have been deployed due to the chemical nature of the substance involved, which poses risks to responders operating inside the site.
