Viral Train Container Reuse Video Exposed as Misleading by Government Fact-Check

PIB debunks viral video of reused train containers, confirms they were cleaned before disposal.

A viral video purportedly showing pantry staff reusing disposable food containers on a train sparked widespread concern and outrage on social media, with users questioning the hygiene standards of Indian Railways. The clip, which many claimed was recorded on the Erode-Jogbani Amrit Bharat Express (16601), fueled heated debates online, prompting swift responses from both the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the government’s Press Information Bureau (PIB).

The video depicted pantry staff cleaning used food containers in a train sink, leading to allegations of unhygienic practices and reuse of disposable items. Social media reactions were intense, with one user stating, “Washing used containers in a train sink then serving food again is filth disguised as service in Express trains. This is how standards collapse as management turns blind, passengers get sick, and nobody is held to account.” Another questioned, “How much margin can one save by doing this? Moreover, why the need to do this?” A third user emphasized, “Unhygienic and unacceptable! Reusing used containers without proper sanitation poses serious health risks.”

IRCTC responded promptly on X, stating, “After taking the matter very seriously, the vendor has been identified and removed immediately. The process to cancel the license of the licensee is underway, along with a heavy fine being imposed.” This action aimed to address public concerns and reinforce accountability.

However, the Press Information Bureau, the government’s nodal agency for information dissemination, conducted a fact-check and labeled the video as “misleading.” In a post on X, PIB clarified, “The containers served to passengers were not reused. They were only cleaned before disposal.” This statement debunked the central claim of the video, confirming that the cleaning was part of proper disposal procedures, not an attempt to reuse the containers.

The incident highlights the rapid spread of misinformation on social media and its potential to incite public outrage. It also underscores the importance of fact-checking to clarify misconceptions and maintain public trust in institutions like Indian Railways. While the viral video raised valid concerns about hygiene, PIB’s clarification ensures that the narrative is corrected, reassuring passengers about the safety protocols in place.

As of October 20, 2025, this episode serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance in verifying online content and the role of official channels in addressing public concerns with transparency and accountability.
