Villagers Torch Truck Carrying Buffalo Horns in UP Amid Temple Festivities

Villagers in UP set truck on fire over buffalo horns near temple during Sawan.

In a shocking incident in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a group of villagers set fire to a truck allegedly carrying buffalo horns on Thursday, August 7, 2025, near Warakala village on the Jalalabad-Badaun road. The incident, which unfolded close to the ancient Patna Shiv Temple during the sacred month of Sawan, was triggered by a heated dispute between the truck driver and local residents, escalating tensions in an area bustling with devotees celebrating Shivratri.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Dwivedi, the truck was transporting buffalo horns when the altercation began. "The dispute quickly escalated, leading the villagers to vandalize the vehicle and set its tires ablaze," Dwivedi stated. Police and fire department teams were promptly dispatched to the scene, where they successfully extinguished the fire. A veterinary doctor was summoned to examine the cargo, confirming the horns were from buffaloes. Samples have been sent for forensic analysis to verify the findings.

The incident has raised concerns due to its proximity to the Patna Shiv Temple, a revered site that attracts thousands of devotees during Sawan, particularly on Shivratri. Locals expressed outrage, questioning how a vehicle carrying animal remains was allowed near the temple during such a significant religious period. "This is a sacred place, and such activities are unacceptable," said a local devotee, who wished to remain anonymous.

Authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for arson and property damage. The police are investigating the circumstances leading to the dispute and the subsequent destruction of the truck. "We are working to identify the perpetrators and ensure justice is served," Dwivedi added.

The incident has sparked debates about transportation regulations and the enforcement of restrictions near religious sites, especially during festivals. As the investigation continues, the event underscores the delicate balance between local sentiments and logistical operations in sensitive areas.
