VHP Chief Alleges Negligence By Champat Rai In Ram Temple Donation Case

Allegations surface in Ram temple donation controversy.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has said it is not directly responsible for alleged irregularities in donations linked to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, while acknowledging that its senior functionary Champat Rai may face questions over possible negligence depending on the outcome of an ongoing investigation. The remarks were made by VHP international president Alok Kumar in an interview, as the matter continues to be probed by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

According to Kumar, the organisation has taken a position of awaiting the completion of the investigation before deciding on any formal disciplinary or administrative action against Rai, who previously served as general secretary of the Ram Temple trust. He stated that while the allegations are serious and have affected public sentiment, no conclusive findings have yet been established against Rai himself.

Kumar emphasised that the VHP’s role in the temple construction concluded after the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute, after which the responsibility for construction and management of the temple was transferred to the relevant trust and administrative bodies. He further asserted that the organisation should not be held accountable for alleged financial misconduct under the trust’s operations.

Addressing questions over Rai’s position, Kumar acknowledged that “on moral grounds” some action may eventually be considered by the VHP, but stressed that decisions would be based on the outcome of the investigation rather than preliminary allegations. He added that Rai does not formally represent the VHP in his capacity within the temple trust structure, and therefore organisational accountability is limited.

Kumar also pushed back against suggestions that the controversy reflects on the VHP, the RSS or political leadership, arguing that attempts to link the organisation to the issue may have political motivations. He maintained that the priority should be a transparent and expedited investigation, calling for the filing of an FIR, a senior-level probe, and a fast-track judicial process to ensure timely justice. He further stated that disciplinary action cannot be taken in the absence of proven wrongdoing, noting that current allegations appear to be directed at a subordinate individual rather than Rai himself.

According to him, any premature action without the completion of the inquiry would be unjust and procedurally improper. The case continues to draw attention due to its association with the Ram Temple project, one of the most high-profile religious and political developments in recent years. As the SIT investigation proceeds, both administrative accountability and organisational responsibility remain under public scrutiny, with further developments expected once formal findings are submitted.
