Varanasi Police File FIRs Over Misleading AI Images Targeting Manikarnika Ghat Project

Eight FIRs filed in Varanasi over AI-generated images and misleading claims on Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment.

Authorities in Varanasi have registered eight FIRs after AI-generated images and misleading social media posts related to the ongoing redevelopment of Manikarnika Ghat went viral. The visuals, which allegedly distorted facts about the project, triggered public outrage and widespread online criticism.

The FIRs target eight individuals and certain X handles accused of sharing fabricated images and false information about the beautification work at the historic cremation site. Police officials stated that some posts even depicted Hindu deities in a distorted manner, allegedly aimed at hurting religious sentiments and disrupting social harmony.

According to Varanasi police, the complaint was lodged at the Chowk police station by a company overseeing redevelopment work, which has been enhancing cremation facilities and beautifying the ghat since November 15, 2025. The misleading posts were reportedly shared late on January 16, 2026, and quickly drew objectionable comments and reposts.

ACP Atul Anjan warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone posting or spreading similar content on social media in the future. The FIRs also reportedly include the names of leaders associated with the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, highlighting the politically sensitive nature of the controversy.

The redevelopment project has previously faced protests from local residents concerned about potential damage to the heritage of the centuries-old ghat. Authorities said that in addition to FIRs against the original posters, legal proceedings are also being initiated against individuals who reposted or commented on the misleading content, emphasizing zero tolerance for misinformation.

The police have assured the public that the work at Manikarnika Ghat will continue while maintaining heritage sensitivity, and warned that further dissemination of false information online will invite stringent legal consequences.
