UP Man Strangles Wife, Buries Body In Backyard After Phone Dispute

Police say a Gorakhpur man murdered his wife after a phone dispute, buried the body, and misled investigators before confessing.

A laborer named Arjun allegedly strangled his wife, Khushboo, to death in their home in Gorakhpur district after discovering her secretly using a mobile phone, which she had been hiding from him. The incident occurred on the night of December 21, 2025, when Arjun, who works in Ludhiana, returned home unexpectedly and found Khushboo on the phone. The couple, married for two years, reportedly argued intensely over the “secret” device, leading to the fatal attack while they were alone at home. In a chilling act that echoed the plot of the popular Bollywood film Drishyam, Arjun then dug a six-foot-deep pit behind their house and buried Khushboo's body along with a folding cot to conceal evidence.

Initially, Arjun misled the police and family members by claiming that Khushboo had died by suicide. He maintained this false narrative for several days, attempting to mislead investigators and delay any suspicion. However, inconsistencies in his story, combined with local inquiries and police scrutiny, eventually led him to confess to the crime. Authorities recovered Khushboo's body from the pit behind the house, confirming the murder through postmortem examination and other evidence. The Uttar Pradesh Police have registered a case of murder under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and are continuing their investigation.

The case has drawn widespread attention due to its eerie resemblance to the Drishyam franchise, where a character meticulously covers up a crime by burying evidence and fabricating a false narrative. Police officials noted that Arjun's method of disposal—burying the body with a cot in a deep pit—was strikingly similar to scenes depicted in the films. The motive, rooted in domestic control over personal communication, has once again highlighted issues of patriarchal attitudes, mistrust, and violence within some marriages in the region.

Khushboo's family and local community have expressed shock and grief over the brutal killing, demanding swift justice. Authorities have urged women facing domestic issues to seek help from helplines or local police stations. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for greater awareness, legal protection, and societal change to prevent such tragedies. The case remains under active investigation, with police examining call records, witness statements, and forensic details to build a watertight case against the accused
