UP Man Alleges Forced Conversion Threats by Baba

Chhangur Baba accused of threatening man’s daughters for conversion.

A 35-year-old man, Jyotirgmay Rai, has accused Jamaluddin, alias Chhangur Baba, of threatening to kill his two daughters to force him to convert to Islam, prompting a police investigation in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh. Chhangur Baba, arrested earlier this month by the UP Anti-Terrorism Squad, allegedly targeted individuals from various communities and maintained a rate list for religious conversions.

Rai claims he was brainwashed and coerced by Chhangur Baba after marrying a woman he knew as Ishita, later revealed to be Afreen from a Muslim family, through an Arya Samaj ceremony. Tensions arose when Afreen’s family reportedly pressured Rai to convert following the birth of their second daughter in March 2024. Rai alleges that in November 2024, Afreen took their daughters to Lucknow, where Chhangur Baba held them at knifepoint to enforce his conversion.

After enduring threats in Lucknow from December 2024 to April 2025, Rai returned to Bhadohi without converting and filed a high court petition for custody of his children. Bhadohi Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Mangalik confirmed that a police team is investigating Rai’s complaint, lodged with Additional Director General of Police Piyush Mordia on Tuesday. The case has raised concerns about coercive religious conversions in the region.
