UP Couple Arrested for Rs 25 Lakh Insurance Fraud by Faking Husband's Death
UP Woman and Husband arrested for faking his death to claim Rs 25 lakh insurance payout using fake certificate.
In a bizarre case of insurance fraud in Uttar Pradesh, Ravi Shankar and his wife, Kesh Kumari, were arrested for faking Shankar's death to claim an insurance payout of Rs 25 lakh. The Lucknow Police confirmed that the couple had produced fraudulent documents, including a fake death certificate, to deceive an insurance company and secure the claim amount, which had been transferred to the husband’s account.
The case came to light after Kesh Kumari filed a claim stating that her husband had died on April 9, 2023. Pursuant to the claim, the insurance company transferred the Rs 25 lakh amount on April 21, 2023, without detecting any discrepancy. However, during an internal scrutiny triggered later, the company discovered that Ravi Shankar was very much alive, which prompted them to alert the police.
According to the police statement, the insurance policy had been issued by Aviva India in December 2012. The complainant Sandeep Wadkur reported the suspicious claim, and a thorough investigation was launched. Both Ravi Shankar and Kesh Kumari attempted to evade arrest but were apprehended and brought to the police station. Upon interrogation, the couple confessed to the fraud.
