Undelivered Trail: Aadhaar And PAN Cards Found At Jharkhand Postman's Home
Jharkhand postman suspended after Aadhaar, PAN cards recovery.
A postman in Jharkhand has been suspended after postal officials allegedly recovered hundreds of undelivered letters and parcels, including Aadhaar cards, PAN cards and bank cheque books, from his residence during a departmental inquiry. The incident came to light following complaints from residents who said they had not received important documents despite them being dispatched to their correct addresses. The case pertains to the Pithoria Post Office, located near Ranchi, where postman Vikas Kumar is accused of failing to deliver postal articles for nearly a year.
According to officials, the undelivered items remained stored at his residence instead of being distributed to their intended recipients, raising serious concerns over negligence in handling sensitive documents. The matter surfaced after multiple residents approached postal authorities, claiming they had not received essential identity documents and banking-related correspondence. Many of the affected documents, including Aadhaar cards, PAN cards and cheque books, had already been issued and dispatched by the respective authorities, prompting the Postal Department to initiate an internal investigation.
During the inquiry, postal officials searched the postman's residence and allegedly recovered hundreds of letters and parcels that had not been delivered. The discovery caused concern within the department due to the nature of the documents involved, many of which are essential for identity verification, financial transactions and access to government services. When questioned during the investigation, Vikas Kumar reportedly admitted that he had retained the postal articles but claimed he was unable to locate the addresses of the intended recipients.

According to officials, he said that because he could not identify the correct locations, he kept the letters and parcels at his home instead of returning them to the post office or seeking further assistance. Postal Inspector Deepak Kumar said the allegations were found to have substance during the departmental inquiry. Based on the preliminary findings, the department suspended the postman pending further proceedings. Officials are now examining the recovered postal articles to ensure they are delivered to the rightful recipients as quickly as possible.
The incident has highlighted the importance of timely delivery of official documents such as Aadhaar cards and PAN cards, which are widely used for identity verification, banking, taxation and access to government welfare schemes. Delays in receiving these documents can disrupt financial transactions, benefit transfers and other essential services for citizens. The Postal Department is also expected to review whether additional administrative lapses contributed to the prolonged non-delivery of mail and whether supervisory mechanisms were adequately followed.
Officials have not indicated whether any criminal proceedings will be initiated, but further action could depend on the outcome of the ongoing inquiry. The case has raised concerns over accountability in postal services and the handling of sensitive government documents. Authorities have assured residents that efforts are underway to identify all affected recipients and deliver the recovered letters and parcels while strengthening internal monitoring systems to prevent similar incidents in the future.
