UEFA And Real Madrid Agree: Super League Disputes Resolved for Good
UEFA and Real Madrid end Super League disputes.
UEFA, the European Football Clubs (EFC) body, and Real Madrid have reached an agreement aimed at resolving ongoing disputes linked to the controversial European Super League project. The announcement was made in a joint statement published by UEFA and Real Madrid, signalling a significant development in the long-running standoff between European football’s governing authorities and some of its biggest clubs.
“UEFA, the European Football Clubs (EFC, the sole independent body representing football clubs within Europe), and Real Madrid CF reach an agreement for the good of European club football,” the statement read. The parties said the understanding is based on shared principles intended to strengthen cooperation and stability across the continent’s club competitions.
According to the statement, the agreement will also pave the way for settling legal disputes related to the European Super League once the outlined principles are formally executed and implemented. Real Madrid had been one of the most prominent backers of the breakaway competition, which was launched in 2021 by 12 elite European clubs seeking to create a new midweek tournament outside UEFA’s structure.

The Super League proposal triggered widespread backlash from fans, domestic leagues, players, and football authorities, leading to the rapid withdrawal of most founding clubs within days of its announcement. Legal battles and political tensions have continued in the years since, particularly involving clubs that initially maintained support for the project.
Last week, the Spanish club Barcelona confirmed its withdrawal from the Super League, further weakening the initiative. The latest agreement involving Real Madrid marks another step toward closing a turbulent chapter in European football governance, with stakeholders emphasising unity and the long-term interests of the sport.
