Two Robbery Suspects Killed in Ghaziabad Police Encounter After Highway Heist

Two robbery suspects killed in Ghaziabad police encounter.

Two men accused in the ₹27-lakh cash van robbery on National Highway-9 in Ghaziabad were killed in a police encounter near Wave City late Tuesday night after they allegedly opened fire on a police team attempting to intercept them, officials said. The encounter took place following a tip-off that four robbery suspects were travelling in a car near the area around 10 pm. Police said the accused tried to escape and opened fire when officers moved to stop the vehicle, prompting retaliatory action.

According to investigators, the robbery occurred on May 6 near Bagu, close to Crossings Republik Township on NH-9. The accused allegedly targeted a cash-filling van carrying ₹27 lakh and held the driver at gunpoint while the vehicle was parked near the highway. Police said one of the suspects fired a shot in the air before the group fled with the van. The vehicle was later abandoned nearly 15 kilometres away on the Delhi-Meerut Motorway near Naifal, while the accused escaped in a Baleno car that had allegedly been trailing the van.

Officials said six people were involved in the robbery. Earlier this week, two suspects identified as Mohammad Kaif, 20, and Mohammad Rizwan, 23, were arrested, and police recovered ₹8.6 lakh from them. The remaining suspects had been on the run since the incident, prompting intensified police operations across Ghaziabad and adjoining areas. Investigators had been tracking the movement of the accused through surveillance inputs and local intelligence before Tuesday night’s encounter.

Police stated that further details regarding the identities of the two deceased suspects and the recovery of weapons or stolen cash would be confirmed after forensic examination and official documentation. The incident adds to a growing number of police encounters reported in Uttar Pradesh in recent years, often linked to organised crime, robbery, and gang-related offences. Authorities said investigations into the robbery case are continuing to identify any additional accomplices and trace the remaining stolen money.
