Twisha Dowry Case: Samarth Taken Into Custody After Surrender In Jabalpur Court

Lawyer Samarth surrenders in Twisha dowry death investigation.

The death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma in Bhopal has escalated into a high-profile dowry harassment case involving her husband Samarth Singh, a lawyer, and her mother-in-law Giribala Singh, a retired judge. Twisha was found hanging at her residence in the Katara Hills area on May 12. Although initially reported as suicide, her family has strongly alleged continuous dowry harassment and mental cruelty, prompting demands for strict legal action against the accused. The case has drawn significant attention due to the family's refusal to accept her body and calls for a fresh investigation.

Samarth Singh surrendered before a court in Jabalpur hours after withdrawing his anticipatory bail application from the Madhya Pradesh High Court. He arrived at the court disguised in a mask, cap, sunglasses, and a cloth draped over his shoulder. The court directed him to surrender in Bhopal, where a police team present at the premises immediately took him into custody. Meanwhile, Twisha’s family has accused the couple of repeated humiliation and harassment, claiming she often expressed feeling trapped in an unhappy marriage.

In a powerful statement to NDTV, Twisha’s brother, Major Harshit Sharma, described the alleged cruelty as “unfathomable.” He highlighted how Twisha’s character and the legitimacy of a potential child were questioned by both her husband and mother-in-law, even as she reportedly wanted to have a baby. Major Sharma alleged that Giribala Singh interfered with the investigation and created a suffocating environment at home, questioning how any woman could raise a child in such conditions. The family has also raised serious concerns over the handling of the initial probe.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has taken cognizance of the family’s complaints regarding lapses in the first autopsy. The court permitted a second post-mortem to be conducted by a team from AIIMS Delhi in Bhopal. Discrepancies, including the recorded height of the deceased in the post-mortem report differing from police documents, have further fueled doubts about the original findings. Twisha’s family had alleged that visible injuries were not properly documented in the first examination.

In a parallel development, police have approached the High Court seeking cancellation of Giribala Singh’s anticipatory bail. They argued that the sessions court overlooked critical WhatsApp chats containing direct allegations against her and Samarth. Authorities claim Giribala violated bail conditions by allegedly attempting to tamper with evidence and influence the investigation. The retired judge had earlier made several disparaging public remarks about Twisha, including questioning her character and values.

The case continues to unfold with multiple legal proceedings underway in Bhopal and Jabalpur. It has once again spotlighted issues of dowry harassment and the challenges faced by women in seemingly privileged households. Police investigations are ongoing, with both sides presenting contrasting narratives—Twisha’s family pointing to systemic cruelty, while the Singh family has claimed she suffered from depression and substance issues. Authorities are expected to intensify efforts to ensure a thorough and transparent probe.
