Turkish Airlines Flight TK726 Tyre Fire at Kathmandu Airport; All Passengers Safely Evacuated

Turkish Airlines flight catches fire during landing in Kathmandu; all passengers evacuated safely.

A Turkish Airlines aircraft experienced a tyre fire while landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu early Monday morning, prompting emergency response measures and the evacuation of passengers and crew members. Authorities confirmed that the situation was brought under control quickly and that no casualties or injuries were reported. The incident occurred shortly after the flight arrived from Istanbul, drawing immediate attention from airport emergency services and security personnel stationed at the airport.

According to airport officials, the aircraft involved in the incident was operating as Turkish Airlines flight TK726 from Istanbul to Kathmandu. During the landing process, fire broke out in the right-side tyres of the aircraft, leading airport authorities to activate emergency protocols. Fire engines were immediately dispatched to the runway area to contain the flames and prevent the situation from escalating further. Officials stated that the fire was successfully extinguished within a short period of time.

Passengers on board the aircraft were evacuated through emergency exits as rescue teams and airport staff coordinated evacuation procedures on the runway. Visuals from the airport showed emergency personnel surrounding the aircraft while passengers were guided to safety. Authorities said the evacuation process was carried out smoothly and efficiently, with all passengers and crew members safely removed from the aircraft without panic or reported medical emergencies.

Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Silawal, attached to airport security, confirmed the details of the incident in a statement to ANI. He said the aircraft’s tyre caught fire while landing and that airport fire services acted immediately to contain the blaze. Officials also confirmed that emergency response teams remained on standby even after the fire was extinguished to ensure there was no risk of re-ignition or additional technical complications involving the aircraft.

Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal’s busiest and only international airport, has witnessed occasional emergency landings and technical incidents in recent years due to challenging weather conditions and operational pressures. Aviation authorities are expected to conduct a detailed technical inspection of the Turkish Airlines aircraft to determine the exact cause of the tyre fire. Preliminary assessments suggest the incident may have been linked to friction or a landing gear-related issue, though officials have not yet issued a final conclusion.

The incident temporarily drew attention to runway safety and aircraft maintenance standards, though airport operations reportedly continued with minimal disruption after emergency teams secured the area. Turkish Airlines has not yet released an official statement regarding the cause of the incident or the condition of the aircraft. Aviation authorities in Nepal are expected to submit a detailed report after completing the investigation into the emergency landing and tyre fire.
