Trump’s 5 Unusual Hiding Places: Airport Truck, Bunker, Golf Cart And More

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly been moved out of public view during his political career, sometimes because of genuine security concerns and, in at least one reported instance, apparently to avoid the attention of the press. His security teams have used back entrances, underground facilities, armoured vehicles and other unconventional methods to conceal his movements. The episodes have ranged from responses to protests and potential threats to arrangements designed to keep his whereabouts away from journalists travelling with him.

One of the most unusual incidents reportedly occurred in Turkey last month, when Trump's security team took extraordinary measures to conceal his movements amid what was described as a credible Iranian assassination threat. Trump had arrived in Ankara for a NATO summit aboard a newly renovated Boeing 747 that had been donated by Qatar. Before leaving Turkey, however, he announced that he wanted to return to Britain aboard the older and familiar presidential 747, saying he wanted to do so "for old time's sake". The change in aircraft and the security arrangements surrounding his departure added another layer of secrecy to his movements.

According to the report, Trump's team went to unusual lengths to prevent the press from tracking his movements as he prepared to leave Turkey. The reported use of a catering truck to move the president across an airport was particularly striking because of the apparent effort to disguise his departure. Rather than travelling through the airport in a conventional presidential motorcade that could easily be observed by journalists, Trump was reportedly concealed using an airport vehicle. The episode illustrated the degree to which security officials can alter established travel arrangements when they believe a president may face a serious threat.

Trump has also previously been taken into a secure bunker during periods of heightened security concern. One of the best-known examples occurred during protests near the White House in 2020, when demonstrators gathered outside the presidential residence amid nationwide unrest following the death of George Floyd. Trump was moved to an underground shelter at the White House complex as security officials responded to the situation outside. The move drew widespread attention because presidential movements are ordinarily carefully choreographed, and the decision to take Trump underground became a prominent part of the coverage of the protests.

Another unusual security measure involved an armoured golf cart. Trump has at times used golf carts as part of his movements, particularly when travelling around large properties or locations where a conventional motorcade would be impractical. The vehicles can provide a degree of protection while allowing security personnel to move the president quickly over shorter distances. The use of an armoured golf cart therefore combined Trump's preference for golf with the extensive security requirements that accompany presidential travel. Such arrangements demonstrate how even seemingly ordinary forms of transport can be adapted when the US president needs to be moved discreetly or rapidly.

Over the years, Trump's protective detail has also relied on less conspicuous entrances and alternative routes to move him away from crowds or potentially dangerous situations. These measures reflect the competing demands of presidential visibility and security. The president's movements are routinely followed by journalists, members of the public and security personnel, making complete secrecy difficult. When circumstances require it, however, the Secret Service can rapidly change plans and use unconventional transportation or secure locations.
