Trump Visit To India Likely As US Moves To Advance Trade Agreement Talks

US signals possible Trump India visit amid trade negotiations push.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that preparations are underway for a possible visit by US President Donald Trump to India early next year, marking what would be a significant diplomatic engagement between the two countries if finalised.

In an interview with IANS in Washington, Rubio said the administration is “hoping” to arrange the visit in the early part of next year and described the proposed trip as “very positive” for strengthening bilateral relations. He added that President Trump is “very keen to come” following an invitation extended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rubio characterised India as one of the United States’ closest strategic partners and highlighted the strong personal rapport between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi. He noted that this relationship plays an important role in shaping broader diplomatic engagement between Washington and New Delhi.

If confirmed, the visit would be President Trump’s first trip to India since the “Namaste Trump” event in February 2020 and his first since returning to the White House. The potential visit is also being viewed as part of a broader effort to advance ongoing negotiations on a long-pending India–US trade agreement.

According to Rubio, trade negotiators are in the “last inches” of finalising the agreement, and there is hope that progress on the deal could coincide with the presidential visit. He also pointed to wider areas of cooperation on the agenda, including defence ties, energy security, critical supply chains, and coordination within the Indo-Pacific region through frameworks such as the Quad.

Rubio further said he intends to travel to India before the end of this year to help prepare for the proposed visit and maintain momentum in bilateral relations. While no official schedule has been confirmed by the White House, his remarks have intensified speculation that a high-profile visit could soon be on the horizon.
