Trump Indicates Openness To Flexibility Over Russian Oil Sanctions Waiver

Trump hinted at possible flexibility regarding Russian oil sanctions waiver policy.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signalled that Washington could remain flexible on extending waivers related to sanctioned Russian oil exports, amid rising crude prices and volatility in global financial markets. His remarks came as concerns over energy supply disruptions and tensions involving Iran continued to influence international oil markets.

The United States recently extended a sanctions waiver until May 16, allowing countries to continue purchasing certain petroleum products linked to Russia, despite earlier indications that the exemption might not be renewed. Responding to a question on whether the waiver would continue, Trump said the US would “do whatever is necessary” to ensure stability, while also expressing confidence that ongoing geopolitical tensions would not last long.

Trump said he expected oil prices to decline and argued that markets would stabilise once tanker movement resumed normally through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes. He claimed several oil tankers were waiting to pass through the region and suggested that increased supply would help reduce inflationary pressures globally and within the United States.

Addressing the possibility of a peace agreement with Iran, Trump said the US was focused on securing what he described as a “good deal” for the American people. He also claimed Iran’s military capabilities had been severely weakened and reiterated Washington’s longstanding position that Tehran must not obtain nuclear weapons. Trump added that discussions and strategic decisions regarding the situation were still ongoing.

The US President also defended the effectiveness of measures imposed against Iran, including blockades and economic pressure, stating that “one way or the other” the situation would work out in America’s favour. He maintained that Iran had already agreed it would not pursue nuclear weapons and warned that the US would not compromise on that issue.

In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump criticised sections of the American media, accusing them of spreading misleading narratives about Iran’s position and undermining US interests. He claimed Iran’s naval and air capabilities had been largely dismantled and described the country as facing severe economic difficulties, while continuing to portray the US approach as firm and successful in dealing with Tehran.
