Trump Asks South Korea if Kim Jong Un is Ready to Talk Again, Reviving Diplomacy Hopes

Trump raises North Korea talks prospect during Washington meeting with South Korean premier.

Donald Trump has raised the possibility of renewed diplomatic engagement with Kim Jong Un during talks with Kim Min-seok in Washington. According to reports citing South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, the discussion included whether North Korea’s leader might be open to reopening communication channels with the United States.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Kim Min-seok said Trump asked about the prospects for dialogue with Pyongyang and whether Kim Jong-un might be willing to restart talks. The conversation has revived speculation that Washington could once again pursue direct diplomacy with North Korea, following several years of stalled negotiations over the country’s nuclear programme.

During Trump’s earlier presidency, he held three historic meetings with Kim Jong Un, marking the first time a sitting US president had met a North Korean leader. Those summits took place in Singapore in 2018, Hanoi in 2019, and at the inter-Korean border in the Korean Demilitarised Zone later that year. While the meetings were seen as a major diplomatic breakthrough, they ultimately failed to produce a lasting agreement on denuclearisation.

The latest discussions suggest that Washington may be exploring whether conditions exist for restarting negotiations. Analysts note that any renewed engagement would depend on North Korea’s willingness to return to talks and address concerns related to its nuclear weapons programme and regional security.

South Korea has traditionally played a key role in facilitating dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang. Observers say the conversation between Trump and Kim Min-seok could indicate an attempt to gauge Seoul’s views and coordinate potential diplomatic steps before approaching North Korea directly.

However, it remains unclear whether Kim Jong Un would respond positively to a new round of negotiations. Diplomatic relations between the United States and North Korea have remained largely frozen in recent years, with tensions periodically rising over missile tests and military exercises in the region.
