Tragic Death of Pregnant Woman in Kerala Raises Questions About Domestic Abuse
Pregnant Archana found dead amid allegations of domestic abuse in Thrissur.
A 20-year-old pregnant woman named Archana was found dead behind her husband’s house in Kerala’s Thrissur district on Wednesday, in an apparent case of self-immolation. Her family alleges she was subjected to ongoing domestic violence and abuse by her husband, Sharon, igniting an investigation by local authorities.
Archana had married Sharon six months ago through a love marriage, but according to her parents, the relationship soon turned abusive. They reported that Sharon physically assaulted her regularly and isolated her from her family by restricting all communication. Archana’s father revealed instances of violence that led to complaints being filed, but the abuse reportedly continued despite interventions.
Her sister, Anu, shared that Archana’s dreams of completing a B.Tech degree and settling abroad in Canada were disrupted by Sharon’s controlling behavior and intimidation. Family members described how Sharon prevented Archana from maintaining contact with them, with the last interaction reportedly controlled and limited.
The police have taken Sharon into custody following the family’s complaints and are also investigating the role of Sharon’s mother. Charges include abetment of suicide and violations under the Dowry Prohibition Act. Authorities confirmed that Sharon struggled with alcohol and drug addiction, adding complexity to the case. Archana’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination while the investigation continues.
