Tragic Death in Noida: Software Engineer Drowns as Car Plunges into Drainage Pit Amid Dense Fog
Software engineer dies after car falls into drainage pit in Greater Noida amid dense fog.
A 27-year-old software engineer, Yuvraj Mehta, lost his life Friday night after his car collided with a drainage boundary and plunged into a 70-foot-deep water-filled ditch in Sector 150, Greater Noida. The accident occurred amid dense fog, raising concerns over inadequate road safety measures in the area.
Officials said the absence of reflectors and poor signage on the service road caused Mehta’s vehicle to hit a high-ground ridge separating two drainage basins. Eyewitnesses recounted that Mehta screamed for help as his car submerged, even making a desperate phone call to his father, pleading for rescue.
Rescue operations were immediately launched by local police, divers, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). After nearly five hours of efforts, Mehta and his car were pulled out of the ditch, but he was declared dead at the scene. His father, Rajkumar Mehta, was present throughout the harrowing rescue attempt.

Following the tragedy, Mehta’s family lodged a complaint against authorities for failing to install reflectors or cover open drains along the road. Rajkumar Mehta expressed anguish, stating that “proper safety measures could have saved my son’s life,” highlighting negligence amid repeated public requests.
The incident has sparked protests in the area, with local residents demanding immediate action to prevent future accidents. Protesters alleged that authorities had ignored repeated appeals for proper signage and reflective markers, urging accountability and urgent corrective measures.
Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway, and any negligence identified during the probe will result in legal action. Knowledge Park Police Station in-charge Sarvesh Kumar assured that strict measures would follow to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
