TMC’s Banerjee Accuses BJP of Power Grab

Abhishek Banerjee accuses BJP of undermining democracy.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee accused the Centre of pushing constitutional amendment bills to amass unchecked power and destabilize opposition-led state governments. The remarks were made in response to three bills set to be tabled in Parliament, which propose the removal of a prime minister, Union minister, chief minister, or state minister detained for 30 consecutive days on serious criminal charges.

Banerjee, the TMC’s second-in-command after Mamata Banerjee, took to X to denounce the bills as “draconian” and reflective of the BJP’s authoritarian agenda. “Instead of fulfilling its constitutional responsibility, this government is solely interested in amassing power, wealth, and control without any accountability,” he posted, condemning the bills as an assault on India’s democratic fabric. He argued that supporting these measures equates to “selling the soul of India” and treating the nation as the BJP’s private property.

The Diamond Harbour MP further accused the Modi government of neglecting the needs of farmers, workers, and the poor while failing to protect national sovereignty. He pointed to the Centre’s inaction on reclaiming Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), calling its rhetoric hollow and lacking resolve in defending India’s borders. Banerjee alleged that the bills are designed to target opposition leaders, undermine federalism, and manipulate electoral mandates by toppling state governments.

Labeling the government as “anti-people, anti-farmer, anti-poor, anti-SC, anti-ST, anti-OBC, anti-federal, and above all anti-India,” Banerjee vowed that the ideals of Gandhi and Ambedkar would not yield to “dictators and power-hungry rulers.” The proposed bills—the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025—have sparked widespread controversy, with opposition parties rallying against what they see as an attempt to centralize power and weaken democratic institutions.

As the TMC intensifies its opposition, Banerjee’s remarks signal a broader resistance to the Centre’s legislative moves, setting the stage for a heated parliamentary battle. The bills, if passed, could reshape political accountability in India, raising critical questions about the balance of power and the future of federal governance.
