Three Andhra teenage girls drown at Mullungummi waterfall while filming selfie videos.

Three teenage girls drowned at Mullungummi waterfall in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitharama Raju district after slipping into the water while attempting to take photographs, in a tragic incident that has renewed concerns over safety at popular natural tourist destinations.

The incident took place on Thursday at Mullungummi Waterfall, located near Burja panchayat in Hukumpeta mandal. According to police, a group of five teenage girls from Jambavalasa village had visited the scenic waterfall during festival holidays to spend time and take photographs and selfie videos at the site.

Authorities said the situation turned tragic when three of the girls climbed onto a large rock positioned in the middle of the flowing stream to capture pictures. While posing for photographs, they reportedly lost their balance and slipped into the fast-moving water, which quickly carried them away due to the strong current.

Locals who were present nearby rushed to the scene after hearing calls for help, but the force of the water made rescue efforts extremely difficult. Despite immediate attempts to save them, the three girls were swept further downstream and could not be rescued in time.

The victims were later identified as Trisha (17), Ratna Kumari (16), and Pavitra (16). The remaining two girls who were part of the group managed to escape without injuries. Police and revenue officials reached the location soon after the incident and recovered the bodies, which were sent for postmortem examination.

A case has been registered, and authorities have launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Officials are also assessing whether adequate safety warnings and preventive measures were in place at the waterfall, which is known for attracting large numbers of visitors, especially during holidays.

The tragedy has once again highlighted persistent safety concerns at waterfalls and other natural tourist spots in the Alluri Sitharama Raju district. Locals and community members have called for stronger preventive measures, including warning signage, barricades, and increased security presence, to reduce the risk of similar accidents in the future.
