The SUV Trunk Incident: Why Trump Aide Natalie Harp’s Unorthodox Role is Drawing Scrutiny

Harp Reportedly Rode In Trump’s Trunk.

US President Donald Trump's unusually close relationship with aide Natalie Harp is drawing renewed scrutiny after a report said she once travelled in the trunk of an SUV to attend one of his court appearances. The account, reported by CNN, has added to questions about the level of access Harp has to Trump and her frequent presence around the president during events where access is typically restricted to senior officials, staff and security personnel.

The report comes as Democratic Senator questioned why Harp was among a small group of people who accompanied Trump during a plane swap in Turkey. The incident has prompted further attention to Harp's role and proximity to the president. While aides and advisers can have varying levels of access depending on their responsibilities and the president's preferences, Harp's repeated presence in sensitive or tightly controlled settings has raised questions among Trump's critics and political observers.

According to CNN, the unusual incident involving Harp took place in October 2023, when Trump was preparing to leave Trump Tower in New York City for a courthouse appearance. Trump was facing legal proceedings in New York at the time, and his movements were accompanied by a motorcade and security arrangements. Harp reportedly wanted to join the president but was not initially able to secure a place in the vehicles travelling with him.

Two people familiar with the incident told CNN that Harp became involved in a heated argument with staff members in the lobby of Trump Tower. According to the report, she insisted that Trump had personally asked her to accompany him to the courthouse. With no available place for her in the motorcade, Harp ultimately got into the trunk area of an SUV, allowing her to travel with the group and reach the court appearance.

The episode has become part of broader questions about how Harp has maintained access to Trump. Her proximity has reportedly been noticeable during both official and personal activities, prompting scrutiny over the nature of her responsibilities and the trust placed in her by the president. The questions have gained additional attention following her presence during the recent plane swap in Turkey, where access was reportedly limited to a small group of individuals.

Harp has worked closely with Trump and has been a visible presence within his political orbit. Her relationship with the president has attracted attention in the past because of the level of access she appears to have. The reported SUV incident offers an unusual example of her determination to remain close to Trump during a legal proceeding, although the account does not by itself establish the full scope of her current responsibilities or authority within the administration.

The renewed scrutiny comes as Trump's administration faces continuing questions about access to the president, the role of informal advisers and the distinction between official responsibilities and personal relationships. The reported incident from 2023 has resurfaced because of those broader questions, particularly following Harp's presence during the Turkey plane swap. Neither the reported argument nor Harp's decision to travel in the SUV trunk necessarily establishes misconduct, but the episode has intensified interest in why she has been granted such close access to the president.
